Best Dog Food for Shih Tzus
Choosing the right food for your Shih Tzu is important for their health, coat, and longevity. As experienced breeders, here are our recommendations.
What to Look For
- Small-breed formula designed for toy breeds
- Real meat as the first ingredient
- Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids for coat health
- No artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives
- Appropriate calorie density to prevent obesity
Feeding Schedule
Shih Tzu puppies (8-12 weeks): 3-4 small meals per day. Adult Shih Tzus: 2 meals per day. Avoid free-feeding as Shih Tzus can be prone to weight gain.
Portion Guidance
A typical adult Shih Tzu (9-16 lbs) requires approximately 1/2 to 1 cup of dry food per day, split between two meals. Always follow the feeding guidelines on your specific food bag and adjust based on your dog's weight and activity level.
